This section enables you to search for recipes, ingredients and other information in two nineteenth-century Canadian cookbooks. You may choose to browse either of the two cookbooks by clicking on the links below or you may perform a search in one or both cookbooks. Visit the Help section to learn more about the database.

Help

The search screen allows you to search either of the cookbooks, or both at the same time. You can narrow your search by choosing a specific search option, or by choosing a combination of options. Use the "and", "or", and "not" buttons to combine or limit your search options.

Entire Book

Choose this option to search for a word or phrase in any part of the book or books.

Category

Choose this option to search for a specific category, such as Soups, Fish, Eggs, etc. The categories are derived from the table of contents for each book. View the table of contents by selecting the cookbook "Browse" links above.

Recipe Title

Choose this option to search for a specific recipe title, such as Ox Tail Soup, Tapioca Pudding, etc.

Recipe Contents

Choose this option to search for a specific ingredient, such as salt, apples, onions, etc. You can also use this option to search for cooking instructions and measurements contained in the recipes, such as chop, boil, pinch and dash.

Results

A successful search will provide you with a list of results including the recipe title and the book in which the recipe is found. Click on the recipe title to view the recipe.

Item Display

When you click on a recipe title in your results list, a book page will be displayed. You can then browse forward or backward from that page in the cookbook, return to your results list, or start a new search.

If you click on the book title in your results list, you will be brought to that cookbook's browse page.
