Chapter 2: Books, etc.

Table of Contents:

2.1C - Optional addition. General Material Designation (voir en français)

Option

Use the terms from list 2, Chap. 1.

The general material designation "text" for eye-readable printed copy is not used unless the GMD "text" is to be further qualified.

[text (large print)]

If the item being catalogued has been reproduced in a form other than eye-readable print (e.g., microform), the general material designation appropriate to the reproduction is used.

For the application of the term, "large print" see rule interpretation 1.1C.

2.2B3 - Edition statement. Optional addition (voir en français)

Option

The option is not applied. Any edition information supplied by the cataloguer is given in the notes area.

2.2B4 - Edition statement (voir en français)

Option

Give parallel edition statement(s) in accordance with the provisions established under "Levels of Detail in Description".

2.4D1 - Name of publisher, distributor, etc. (voir en français)

Option

The option is applied occasionally.

Interpretation

Add the name and place of the distributor when the information is necessary for clarification and is readily ascertainable. Liberal use of the option is discouraged and no strict uniformity is expected.

A source note is preferred if the distributor is Canadian.

2.4E - Optional addition. Statement of function of publisher, distributor, etc. (voir en français)

Option

The option is applied when the information is necessary for clarification and is readily ascertainable. Liberal use of the option is discouraged and no strict uniformity is expected.

2.4G2 - Place of printing, name of printer, date of printing. Optional addition (voir en français)

Option

The option is applied if such information is "considered important", i.e. rarely.

2.5B20 - Number of volumes and/or pagination. Optional addition (voir en français)

Option

The option is applied selectively, e.g. for early printed books. Rule 2.5B19 provides for recording the pagination of continuously paged volumes in a set.

2.5B23 - Large print (voir en français)

Option

The option is not applied.

Even if the term, large print, is used in the general material designation, include large print in the specific material designation.

2.5C2 - Illustrative matter (voir en français)

Option

If a quick examination of the item being catalogued reveals that the illustrations appear to be all of one or two types or chiefly of one or two types, specify the type or types. In the latter case, include also the designation "ill.". In all other cases, use "ill." alone. Also, if there is doubt about specifying a type, use "ill." alone.

Exception: Rare books and material in which the illustrative content is a particularly important aspect of the publication may require detailed illustration statements.

2.5D - Dimensions (voir en français)

In giving the dimensions of an item requiring more than one measurement, use a lower-case "x" as the multiplication sign to separate each of the measurements.

; 20 x 32 cm
; 48 x 30 cm, folded to 24 x 15 cm
; in container 18 x 25 x 19 cm

2.5E1 - Accompanying material (voir en français)

Option (under 1.5E)

The option is applied judiciously. It will be considered when the accompanying material is substantial in volume.

See rule interpretation 1.5E1.

2.7B - Notes (voir en français)

Examples

For examples of notes used by Library and Archives Canada, see " Descriptive cataloguing notes".

2.7B4 - Variations in title (voir en français)

Option

The option is not applied.

Reasoning

The title romanized appears as the title proper in LAC records. Indicate in a note that the title proper has been romanized.

Title romanized.

2.7B16 - Other formats (voir en français)

Interpretation

Give a note on other formats available only when other formats are known to exist at the time of cataloguing (see 1.5A3).

2.7B18 - Contents (voir en français)

Bibliography note

If a publication contains bibliographical citations in any form, use the following note:

Indexes

If the publication contains an index (or indexes) to its own contents, make a note as appropriate.

Includes index

2.8C - Optional addition. Terms of availability (voir en français)

Option

The option is generally not applied.

The option, however, will be applied (i.e., include the price) to preliminary CIP items because of the need to provide such information in Forthcoming Books. Do not update (i.e., neither delete nor change) this information upon receipt of the item.

2.8D1 - Qualification (voir en français)

Option (under 1.8E)

The option is applied only as a qualification to the standard number whenever applicable. Terms of availability are generally not used (see rule interpretation 2.8C).

When required, use a brief qualification (see 1.8E1) and note that consistency of terminology is not necessary. Do not make up and use qualifiers additional to that found in the transcribed data. Record the type of binding as a qualification only if it is required to differentiate between two or more ISBNs.

2.12 - 2.18 - Early printed monographs (voir en français)

Interpretation

Generally speaking, in applying these rules, Library and Archives Canada interprets "early printed monographs" as books published before 1821.

For works published in 1821 or after, rules 2.0-2.11 will be applied.
