One of Canada's oldest cities, St. John's began as a fishing port in the 1500s. It became the colonial capital of Newfoundland in 1832 and the provincial capital in 1949, when Newfoundland joined Canada. This print shows ships departing for the seal fishery. It is a rare view of St. John's, one taken before the disastrous fire of 1846, which destroyed much of the town.
