Although most prints in the Peter Winkworth Collection date to the pre-Confederation period, Mr. Winkworth's interest in early Canadian-made prints easily led to an interest in Canadian etching revival prints of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These small, informal prints were produced solely by the artist, who created the composition directly on the copper printing plate, experimented with various techniques and did the printing. Printmakers gradually established themselves in the artistic community and nurtured an appreciation for their art. |
