The W. H. Coverdale Collection of Canadiana was acquired in 1970 by the Government of Canada. In total, 2,482 works were purchased, 62 were transferred to the National Gallery of Canada, and the remainder to the National Archives of Canada, including 224 maps and 2,145 drawings and prints. The collection was assembled largely through the personal efforts of William Hugh Coverdale (1871-1949), president of Canada Steamship Lines from 1922 to 1949.

The Coverdale Collection was previously known as the Manoir Richelieu Collection, named for the company’s hotel at Murray Bay, Quebec, where it was displayed. In 1973, the National Archives organized an exhibition of 100 works from the collection that were circulated to eight Canadian cities. A comprehensive and illustrated catalogue of 500 of the paintings, watercolours and drawings was published in 1983 by the National Archives, and contains innovative research on many of the artists. Since the acquisition of the Coverdale Collection in 1970, works have been loaned to several important exhibitions and reproduced in dozens of publications.
