MONTREAL'S INFRASTRUCTURE

Expo 67 was a major reason for Montreal's reputation as an important international city. Major infrastructures were constructed or improved, and Expo 67 greatly increased Montreal's visibility.

Construction of the Montreal metro, which contributed to the creation of Île Notre-Dame, marked the city's development. At a time when cars began appearing everywhere in urban centres, Montreal became a meeting point for one of the biggest traffic networks in the country: consider, for instance, the Bonaventure and Décarie autoroutes and the Hippolyte-Lafontaine bridge and tunnel.

Buildings were being constructed at a frenzied pace. Impressive structures, such as Place Bonaventure, Plaza Alexis-Nihon and Château Champlain, important centres of development, began showing up on the Montreal skyline. Much of the Place des Arts cultural complex is also attributable to Expo 67.
