The First Elected Party Leader

The first step in becoming prime minister is to assume the leadership of a national party. Until the Liberal convention of 1919, leaders were usually chosen by a caucus of Senators and Members of Parliament. The first leader elected by party delegates in convention, Mackenzie King, later confided in his diary: "I felt a momentary qualm ... at the thought I was likely to win  -  wondering if I could measure up to the task...."
