Politicians who assume the party leadership in opposition are more successful. Robert Borden, who had been the Conservative leader of the opposition for ten years before becoming prime minister, shared the secret of his success  -  a "lucky sprig"  -  with his successor, Arthur Meighen. Meighen lost the 1921 election, apparently ignoring Borden's lucky charm.
