  The Party Fractures
The longest tenure as party leader by someone who had also been prime minister was that of Wilfrid Laurier, who led the Liberals from his defeat in 1911 until his death in 1919. Such political longevity is unusual. It is more typical that a defeated party fractures and seeks to redefine itself. For the leader, the process of renewal is often messy and usually merciless.
