Prime ministers have played a major role in the shaping of the Constitution since John A. Macdonald co-authored the British North America Act of 1867. Robert Borden, Mackenzie King and R. B. Bennett all took part in negotiations that led to the 1931 Statute of Westminster giving Canada autonomy from Britain. In 1982, Pierre Trudeau patriated the Constitution from Britain. More recently, Brian Mulroney supported the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords.
