In 1867, and for decades thereafter, Newfoundland refused to join Canada, but the devastating depression of the 1930s, the effective campaigning of Joey Smallwood, and hopes for a new prosperity within Canada, led to a change of heart. Following months of negotiations with the governments of Mackenzie King and Louis St. Laurent, Newfoundland became Canada's tenth province at midnight, March 31, 1949. |
