  War Leadership, 1939-1945
In 1939, Canada went to war again. Mackenzie King and his cabinet directed the war effort for the next six years, contributing to victory with food supplies, financial aid, the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, and the construction of ships, aircraft and tanks. 1 086 000 Canadians served in the War, with the loss of 42 000 lives. Perhaps Mackenzie King's greatest accomplishment was preserving the unity of the government and the country during a major crisis over conscription in 1944.
