The power of the press is considerable. With persistent coverage of an issue such as prime ministerial patronage or government spending, journalists can influence major policies and play a powerful role at election time. Until well into the 20th century, our leaders could depend on sympathetic stories in newspapers allied with their party. Today, relations between prime ministers and the press are often hostile.
