Dressing Up

Splendid costume was also part of our leaders' role. Before the Second World War, the civil uniform of the British court was worn by Canadian prime ministers at important state occasions. More recently, honorary membership in any one of Canada's distinct societies requires specialized apparel. Generally, parliamentary attire is very conservative, although Pierre Trudeau gained a reputation for his flamboyant dress.
