Canadian Music Council fonds.  - 1947-1990.  - 14 m of textual records.  - ca.  400 photographs.  - 1 negative. 

Administrative history
An umbrella organization founded in 1944, the Council adopted its permanent name in 1945 and received a federal charter in 1949.  It acquired a permanent secretariat in Ottawa in 1976.  Its objectives were as follows:  to provide information on music in Canada, to provoke discussion on musical subjects of general interest, to represent the musical community to governments and international agencies, to contribute to the development of music in Canada, and to be concerned with its status.  The Council ceased its activities in 1990, but still retains its charter. 

Scope and content
The fonds consists of records pertaining to all activities of the Council.  It contains, among others, official records; financial statements; minutes; correspondence with various music organizations.

The fonds comprises the following series:  1 - Constitution and history; 2 - Board of directors; 3 - Council meetings; 4 - Conferences; 5 - Memberships (members of board of directors and associate members); 6 - General correspondence; 7 - Finance; 8 - Publications (Aspects of Music in Canada, Canadian Music Journal, The Canada Music Book, Musicanada); 9 - Council awards; 10 - Lobbying; 11 - International Music Council; 12 - International Society for Contemporary Music; 13 - CIDEM (Conferencia Interamericana de Educación Musical); 14 - Member and non-member organizations; 15 - Special projects (MIDEM); 16 - Miscellaneous; 17 - World Music Week; 18 - Ontario Choral Foundation; 19 - World Music Day; 20 - Special exhibitions; 21 - Personnel files; 22 - Press clippings; 23 - Photographs. 

Immediate source of acquisition:  acquired from the Canadian Music Council in several accessions between 1984 and 1990.  Records pertaining to the Canadian Music Journal acquired through Geoffrey Payzant, editor of that magazine.
