Descriptive Cataloguing Notes

Contents:

The following is intended to provide guidance in the formulation of cataloguing notes and is not intended to be prescriptive.

The structure of this section follows that of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, second edition, 2002 revision, the Règles de catalogage anglo-américaines, deuxième édition, révision de 1998, and their respective updates. The basic notes of general applicability for the description of all library materials are to be found in chapter 1. Notes for specific types of materials presently catalogued by Library and Archives Canada follow and are also grouped by rule number. Where categories of material demand specific types of notes, the general notes contain only brief guidance and the specific notes will be found in the appropriate specific chapters. Generally, basic notes are not repeated in the specific chapters unless a variation of the form of note is to be used in the specific chapter.
