Archival Community Digitization Program

The Archival Community Digitization Program (ACDP) provides financial assistance to Canadian archives and libraries to digitize unique items in collections across Canada and make them available online, free of charge, to all Canadians.

For information about the application process for the Archival Community Digitization Program, please visit www.cdncouncilarchives.ca/ACDP.html.

Program Objectives

The objectives of the Archival Community Digitization Program are to:

  • increase access to Canada's archival heritage through virtual exhibitions and web presentations available to all Canadians;
  • increase awareness and broaden use of Canada's archives;
  • increase the number of digital resources available to Canadians;
  • increase French and aboriginal language content on the Internet;
  • digitize original content reflecting Canada's diversity;
  • provide resources for Canadian youth, students and teachers for education.

Applicant Eligibility

Applicants for funding must meet the following criteria:

  • have a mandate to acquire and preserve archival records and to make these available to the public, according to common archival practices;
  • be a registered member of a provincial archives association;
  • currently hold the archival materials to be digitized; and
  • all funded projects must remain online for at least five years after their launch.

ACDP Management

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) will provide contribution support to the Canadian Council of Archives (CCA) to enable it to provide leadership and services supporting the digitization of archival resources across Canada. Funds are initially supplied to LAC from the Department of Canadian Heritage. The CCA will also serve as third party deliverer of contributions to archival institutions and organizations for the purpose of digitizing archival materials.

A steering committee will be set up each program year to govern the selection of projects for funding through ACDP. These projects will then have funding administered through the CCA from LAC.

ACDP Funding History

The Archival Community Digitization Program first came into effect in the 2004-2005 fiscal year and 2009-2010 is designated as the final year of the program.

All projects are made possible in whole, or in part, through the Canadian Culture Online Program (www.pch.gc.ca/pgm/pcce-ccop/index-eng.cfm) of Canadian Heritage (www.pch.gc.ca/index-eng.cfm), Library and Archives Canada and the Canadian Council of Archives (www.cdncouncilarchives.ca/intro.html).
