Founded in 1642 by the French, Montreal was established as a missionary colony and evolved into a fur-trading centre. After the British conquest of Quebec in 1760, Montreal thrived as a mercantile centre led by Scottish and English entrepreneurs. British military officers posted to Canada produced some of the first landscape views of the city. In the foreground is the farm of fur trader Francois Desrivières.
