Norway House, located at the north end of Lake Winnipeg, was established as a fur-trading post by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1827. Its strategic location at the junction of several waterways made it a main stopping place en route to Hudson Bay and an administrative centre. It is named for the Norwegian workers who helped build it. Today, Norway House is made up of two communitiesan on-reserve community and an off-reserve communitywith a combined population of about 5,000 people. Note the York boats along the shore in this view.
