Introduction Places Life in Canada Print Cabinet
The Peter Winkworth Collection has more than 3,300 prints of places, events and personalities pertaining to Canada. Most were produced in Europe, primarily in England, while a small number were made in Canada. These early Canadian-made prints, particularly those printed before 1850, were of special interest to Mr. Winkworth. Their rarity and importance to Canadian art and history captured his attention, and over the years he collected some thirty examples by various artists and amateur printmakers.

The prize of the collection is perhaps the copper plate etched by James Peachey circa 1781, and is considered to be the first known example of pictorial printmaking in Canada. The earliest Canadian-made print in the collection is an engraving of Montmorency Falls by J.G. Hochstetter.
