To Make You Think Twice

Previous

Name: _______________________________________________________

Sometimes, a picture conveys a message more effectively than a letter or an article. Political cartoons are a unique medium because the message they are transmitting can be understood quickly. They often make you think twice, and leave a mental image.

Your task is to create a political cartoon surrounding one of the events or people involved in the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (GTPR).

Think about some contentious issues surrounding the expansion of the GTPR. Some ideas to get you started:

  • Charles Melville Hays as a leader
  • Sir Wilfrid Laurier as Prime Minister
  • The role of government in taking over the GTPR
  • The expropriation and displacement of people and settlements for the GTPR

For more ideas, search through Activity Resources for links on analyzing political cartoons, image collections and other relevant topics.
