Report from Fort Francis
1857, by Henry Youle Hind

Hind prepared this progress report while camped at Rat Portage (now Kenora, Ontario). The report was submitted to the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada (now Ontario), which was the financial backer of Hind’s expedition to Red River. The accompanying handdrawn map shows that this portion of Hind’s surveys relied heavily on the assistance of local Indian guides; however, their help was not acknowledged when he published his final report.
