McGill University announcement
of lectures on immigration problems by J.S. Woodsworth
ca. 1920
In the early decades of the twentieth century, social
reformers like Methodist minister J.S. Woodsworth travelled
across Canada giving lectures on such topics as "The
Immigrant Invasion" and "Training for Citizenship."
It was clear that more established groups in Canada
felt threatened by the massive wave of immigration and
sought ways to ensure that the newcomers would not upset
the fragile Canadian identity that was still taking
shape.
