Library and Archives Canada is revising its cataloguing policy and practice regarding name headings for government-designated parks, forests, etc. The changes align with the Library of Congress practice as explained in:
www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/parks2.html
Headings for government-designated parks, forests, etc. are most often needed as subject headings for works about these areas. Occasionally headings are needed for works emanating from the administrative entities bearing the same name, that manage or oversee the park, forest, etc.
Government-designated parks and forests can now be represented by two headings:
Works issued by a park will have the name added-entry for the park:
710 2# $aFundy National Park (Agency : Canada)
Works about the physical features of the park as a geographical entity will have the subject heading built according to AACR2 chapter 23.
651 2# $aFundy National Park (N.B.)
Works about the administrative entity operating the park will have the name heading built according to AACR2 chapter 24.
610 2# $aFundy National Park (Agency : Canada)
Existing headings and authority records in the name index constructed according to AACR2 chapter 23 will be revised on an as-encountered basis to add the qualifier and the name of the responsible government if necessary according to LAC RI 24.4C1 no. 4.
