Implementation of Elements from MARC 21 Update No. 5

Sections 1, 2 and 3 of this announcement identify data elements from Update No. 5 (October 2004) to the MARC 21 Formats for Bibliographic and Authority data which became valid in LAC's AMICUS June 2005. Sections 4, 5 and 6 identify data elements for which there are no current implementation plans.

This information will be of interest to users of LAC catalogue records, MRDS subscribers and libraries contributing MARA records. This information is provided to assist in evaluating the impact on automated systems as these elements could be present in records issued by Library and Archives Canada; this does not necessarily mean that these elements will be actively supplied by LAC cataloguing staff.

Data elements in bibliographic records are fully documented in the MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/ecbdhome.html. Elements in authority records are fully documented in the MARC 21 Format for Authority Data www.loc.gov/marc/authority/ecadhome.html.

   The following changes in repeatability from Update No. 5 (Oct. 2004) to the MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data became valid in LAC's AMICUS June 2005.

   The following changes from Update No. 4 (October 2003) to the MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data will not be implemented on AMICUS at Library and Archives Canada at this time. A future notice will be issued when implementation details have been set.
