Sable Collection University of St. Michael's College, John M. Kelly Library Subjects Romantic literature,French History The collection was established in 1976. It was donated by Rev. J. Sable, Associate Professor of French at the University of Toronto. The donated collection is the achievement of a lifetime of negotiating with book dealers in Paris and other cities of the world to which Rev. Sable's scholarly career took him. Description The collection is a collection of books on the Romantic movement in France covering a whole range of creative writers and the works which influenced them. The subcollection of documentary sources is especially rich. The collection includes many first editions and is composed almost exclusively of works published in France during the nineteenth century. Language French predominates. Holdings 8,000 monographs; 100 serial titles; 5 serial titles currently received. Bibliographic Access The works by creative writers are only partially catalogued, but all works are accessible because they are shelved alphabetically by author and title and interfiled with the catalogued material. Nonfiction works are shelved alphabetically by author and title in broad subject categories. The catalogued material circulates as rare books. As for the rest, browsing is allowed by prior arrangement. The holdings are recorded in UTLAS. The LC classification scheme is used.
