Scottish Music University of Guelph, McLaughlin Library Subjects Music--Scotland; Bagpipe music; Dance music--Scotland; Strathspeys History The greatest thrust in the establishment of a first rate Scottish music collection was the acquisition in 1987 of the Cedric Thorpe Davie Collection with generous assistance from SSHRC. Description Material on all aspects of Scottish music is collected, but printed music pre-1900 is given greater emphasis than twentieth century compositions. Recordings are collected at a level to support minimal graduate work and general popular interest. While sheet music is collected, cataloguing tends to be at a minimum level. Language The collection is virtually all English and Gaelic, often with English translation accompanying the Gaelic text. There is a small amount of French critical material. Holdings 750 monographs, serials, scores, sheet music, recordings, music compilations, and bagpipe scores are included in the collection; of these, 130 items are in the Rare Book Collection. Bibliographic Access All titles are catalogued or coded. Access is via the online catalogue. LC classification is used. Government documents are coded in the CODOC system. The archival collections are coded in an adaptation of the cataloguing and coding system.
