Canadian Presbyterian Missionaries to New Hebrides
Atlantic School of Theology, Library

Missions--Vanuatu (New Hebrides); Presbyterian Church--Canada--Missions; Bible--Translations--Oceania; Mission ships

The collection was acquired around 1900 from various donors and sources. Most of the biblical translations were acquired from H. A. Robertson, a missionary to the New Hebrides and a translator of some of the books of the Bible.

The collection contains eighty-five volumes on the history of Presbyterian missions in West Polynesia, especially New Hebrides (later called Vanuatu). It also includes material on the establishment of missionary efforts from Canada; the relationship of Canadian missionary efforts with those of Scotland and Australia; lives of Canadian missionaries; customs of Polynesian natives before Christianity; mission ships; and the history of printing in Oceania. Reports and articles for the years 1859-1905 have been taken from a number of Presbyterian serials. The collection also includes thirty-nine volumes of Oceanic translations mainly of books of the Bible. The chronological emphasis is from 1848 to 1920.

English language material predominates. Also included is West Polynesian material, especially in the dialects of New Hebrides/Vanuatu.

135 monographs; 5 volumes of (photocopied) articles from Presbyterian serials, 1859-1905; 1 picture; 1 stained glass window.
