Church and Religious History of Scotland University of Guelph, McLaughlin Library Subjects Scotland--Church history; Church of Scotland; Free Church of Scotland; Presbyterian Church; Catholic Church; Church of England; Parishes--Scotland--History; Clergy--Scotland--Biography History Although the beginnings of the collection date back to the early Ontario Agricultural College Library, the Scottish Church and Religious History Collection began in earnest with the establishment of the History Department in 1965. As chairman W. Stanford Reid was particularly interested in Scottish church history, this area was very quickly built up. Grants from the Macdonald Stewart Foundation were used to further develop the collection in the early 1970s. Description Material on all aspects of Scottish religious and church history are collected at a comprehensive level. One exception is that Scottish sermons are collected only if they are of interest beyond the purely theological. For example, Rutherford's sermons, while primarily doctrinal and theological in nature, are in essence the justification for the actions of the Cameronian Covenanters in the 1680s. Another exception is that Scottish church hymnals are collected only to exemplify important changes in church policy or disputes. Language English predominates, but material in any language, especially French and Gaelic, is collected if it is on Scottish church history as defined above. Gaelic biblical material is limited to a few examples from significant periods of translations. However, all Gaelic material brought by early Canadian immigrants is of interest. Holdings 3,000 monographs, theses, serials, pamphlets, maps, and archives; of these, 600 items are in the Rare Book Collection and 5 linear metres are in the archives. Bibliographic Access All titles are catalogued or coded. Access is via the On-Line Public Access Catalogue or the CD-ROM catalogue. LC classification is used. Government documents are coded in the CODOC system. The archival collections are coded in an adaptation of the cataloguing and coding system.
