The collection was established ca 1969. The books in the collection have been assembled from the general rare book collection. The collection is expanded by purchase. The wood blocks, also from the rare book collection, were purchased in the 1920s.
Description
The collection is noted for its material on Thomas and John Bewick, two wood engravers in Newcastle, England, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Books containing examples of their wood engravings are included in the collection. The collection also includes seven hundred engraved wood blocks from the early nineteenth century, at least ten of which are by Thomas Bewick.
