Nova Scotia Almanac Collection Dalhousie University, Killam Memorial Library Subjects Almanacs--Nova Scotia; Almanacs, Canadian; Nautical almanacs History The collection was established ca 1910. The core of the collection was developed by J.J. Stewart, a noted Nova Scotian newspaper publisher and bibliophile. In addition, the collection includes almanacs from other donated collections and almanacs purchased when available. Description The collection provides samples of almanacs by all the major Nova Scotian printers up to 1927. Religious, nautical, business, and general information almanacs are present. Consecutive holdings of almanacs by Beleher (1824-1927), Cunnabell (1834-1861), A. Henry (1772-1800), and John Howe (1790-1819) make the collection comprehensive. The collection contains a 1776 Henry almanac believed to be the first Canadian printed book with illustration; an Isaiah Thomas almanac for 1775; a publication of one of Canada's first woman printers/publishers, Mrs. E. Gay, 1806; and three of the pre-1800 Halifax printed German almanacs. Approximately twenty almanacs include manuscript notes. This collection is complemented by a collection of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, and general Canadian almanacs. The library is not expanding its twentieth century coverage. The holdings are recorded in Proser (Provincial serials list) and in files of the Canadian Almanac Project (University of Toronto).
