Niagara Collection Brock University, James A. Gibson Library Subjects Niagara Peninsula--History; Canada--History--War of 1812; United States--History--War of 1812; Welland Canal (Ont.) History The collection was established in 1967. It has been developed through individual purchases, donations, and grants. Description The Niagara Collection includes all published (current and retrospective) material relating to the Canadian Niagara Peninsula, the American Niagara Frontier, Niagara Falls, the Niagara River, and the Great Lakes (particularly Lake Erie and Lake Ontario). All subjects are covered exhaustively: settlement history, genealogy, geography, geology, military history, economics, planning, urban renewal, fiction, poetry, etc. The collection includes a strong War of 1812 collection and extensive material on the Welland Canal. Current and retrospective material continues to be added to the collection. Language English language material predominates. A few items, published in other languages by local ethnic communities, are included (Ukrainian, German, Serbian). Holdings 5,500 books and pamphlets; 75 serials; 33 serials (including local newspapers) are currenty received; 960 reels of local newspapers; 31 audiotapes; 30 reels of theses; 300 microfiches (75 titles). Bibliographic Access The collection is catalogued on-line. LC and NLC subject headings are used. The collection is classified according to LC and NLC classification schemes as well as Brock University Library's Niagara Peninsula Classification Scheme. The holdings are recorded in the National Library Union Catalogue and at ISM. Physical Access The collection is in a Special Collections Room which is open to the public.
