Since 1978 the children's and young adults' books in the National Library have been combined to form a distinct collection.
Description
The Canadian Children's Literature Service provides reference, information and referral services based on its Children's Literature Service Collection. The comprehensive collection contains books suitable for children and young adults 16 years of age and under. It includes books written in English, French and other languages which are published in Canada, as well as books written or illustrated by Canadians and books about Canada, which are published abroad. Books in the collection date from the 19th century to the present day. They are acquired through legal deposit, purchase, or donation. The reference collection, although international in scope, emphasizes Canadiana and includes monographs, serials and vertical file material, including 900 files on Canadian authors, and illustrators, and others on award-winning books.

Bibliographic Access
The collection is available on-site to individuals doing research, or on interlibrary loan through libraries across Canada. Access to the collection is through AMICUS and DYNIX, the National Library of Canada's online catalogues. LC subject headings and classification are used. The Canadian Children's Literature Service responds to questions made in person, by telephone, in writing, and electronically. It also provides and develops electronic products and services on specialized subjects relating to Canadian children's literature, which are available on our World Wide Web site.
Physical Access
