Douglas Duncan Collection University of Toronto, Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library Subjects Literature, Modern; English literature; Lawrence, D.H. History The collection was established in 1970. It was initially formed from a donation by Douglas Duncan, a Toronto art collector and bibliophile, who collected widely in the field of modern literature. Additions have been made from N. J. Endicott's library. Part of the D. H. Lawerance collection was acquired by the library before the Duncan bequest. Description First and all significant subsequent editions of the work of Richard Aldington, Max Beerbohm, Norman Douglas, Aldous Huxley, and D. H. Lawrence are included. Some biographical and critical material, particularly on D. H. Lawrence, is also present. The related manuscript collection includes material on Lawrence, Beerbohm, Aldington, and Douglas. Some unique items include Lawrence's typescripts of Women in love and Birds, beasts and flowers. Authors represented in the De Lury and Endicott Collections are excluded from this collection. Future plans are to continue building the collection by obtaining all important editions and selective critical materials as they are published. Retrospective acquisitions are also actively sought.
