Established in 1925, the collection forms part of the Edith and Lorne Pierce Collection of Canadiana.
The collection includes T.C. Haliburton's (1796-1865) works in all variant editions, and all critical works on Haliburton. Scarce first editions form part of the collection. Present acquisition policy is to acquire work by and about Haliburton not already in the collection.

The collection is catalogued on-line and in the card catalogue in the Special Collections Department. NLC Canadiana authorities and LC subject headings are used. Canadian literature material is classified according to the National Library of Canada schedule. LC classification is used for non-literary works. Items catalogued before June 1980 and after February 1990 are recorded in the National Library Union Catalogue. Special bibliographies and/or indexes include "imprint" files.
