The collection was established in 1925. It forms part of the Edith and Lorne Pierce Collection of Canadiana. In 1981 a grant helped build the collection.

The collection is a comprehensive collection of works by and about Major John Richardson (1796-1852). All new and out-of-print editions are added to the collection when available.
