The collection was acquired in 1980.
The focus of the A.J.M. Smith Collection of books and periodicals is twentieth century Canadian poetry. The collection, from Smith's personal library, includes most of the publications of poets, from Duncan Campbell Scott to Bill Bissett. Most of the books, written by various Canadian poets, are presentation copies bearing inscriptions. The collection also contains twentieth century French Canadian poetry; signed copies of Smith's own books and articles; numerous works of fiction and studies in art, history, and economics; and complete or broken runs of English, American, and Canadian periodicals and poetry magazines. The library also houses the A.J.M. Smith Collection of Archives Material.
English and French language material predominates.
The collection is catalogued on cards and fiche. LC and NLC subject headings are used. LC classification is used. The holdings are recorded in the National Library Union Catalogue and Trace-It.
