Scottish Covenanters
University of Guelph, McLaughlin Library
Subjects
Convenanters; Solemn League and Covenant; Scotland--Church history--17th century
History
The collection was begun in 1965, shortly after the History Department was formed at the university. Interest in the Scottish Covenanters stemmed from the first chairman of the Scottish Studies programme. Anything available was purchased for the early period (1637-1651), using grants from the Macdonald Stewart Foundation and the general library allocation.
Description
The collection is particularly strong in primary materials of the early covenanting period. The later period of the Cameronian Covenanters (1681-1690) has been augmented substantially in recent years. Pamphlets, monographs, and a few broadsides by most of the main Covenanters and their opposition are represented in the collection.
Language
English predominates. Materials in any language for critical works and especially French and Latin for primary sources are collected if they are on the Covenanting period.
