Lady Aberdeen Library on the History of Women|
University of Waterloo, Library
The collection was assembled by the National Council of Women of Canada. Members' donations and donations from other councils helped build the collection. The Council donated the collection to the university in 1967 as partof a centennial project of their Arts and Letters Committee. The Council, local councils, and individual members continue to donate on an occasional basis.
The collection is a mixed collection of books, periodicals, government documents, pamphlets, clippings, manuscripts, and ephemeral material on the history of women, with particular emphasis on Canada. The collection is especially strong in literary and biographical works by and about Council members. It includes the complete published work of Isabel Mackay and Elaine Catley, and material on women's organizations worldwide. The archival collection includes papers of Council members Elizabeth Long, Dr. Elizabeth Smith Shortt, Emily Murphy and Isabel Mackay. The chronological emphasis of the collection is on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
