Batchinsky Collection Carleton University, Maxwell MacOdrum Library Subjects Ukraine--History--19th-20th centuries; Ukraine--Politics and government--19th-20th centuries; Galicia--History History The first instalment of the Batchinsky Collection was acquired from Eugène Batchinsky in Switzerland, in 1976, through the help of Dr. Yury Boshyk, now of the University of Toronto. The second instalment was acquired from the Ukrainian Museum-Archives, Inc. (Cleveland) in 1982, also through Dr. Boshyk. Description The collection contains material on Ukrainian history and politics from the late nineteenth century to World War II. Material on Ukrainian émigré activity from the late nineteenth century to 1956 is also included. There are extensive holdings of, or relating to, particular organizations such as the Union for the Liberation of the Ukraine, the Ukrainian Red Cross Abroad, and the Ukrainian National Republic's Economic Financial Mission to Western Europe. Material on the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church is also part of the collection. Unique items are early pamphlets and runs of journals and newspapers. The chronological emphasis is from the 1860s to World War II. The geographic emphasis is on the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Only publications and manuscript material concerning Eugène Batchinsky are collected actively at present. Material known to have been previously separated from Batchinsky's collection is also pursued actively. To date, about 9,000 manuscripts, documents, and annotated early clippings have been microfilmed on fiche. Language Multilingual. Holdings 700 monographs; 200 serials; 109 linear metres of manuscripts; several paintings and drawings; some maps; paper currency and stamps. Bibliographic Access The collection is uncatalogued. An index of some 11,000 entries, with cross-references to correspondence (about 3,000 items) is largely complete. A detailed finding aid is in preparation, and all publications will be fully catalogued. LC subject headings are used. LC classification is used for publications. Physical Access The material must be used in the special collections area. Advance notice is preferred since the collection is in process and only qualified staff can access the material.
