Winthrop Pickard Bell Collection of Acadiana Mount Allison University, Ralph Pickard Bell Library Subjects Maritime Provinces; Acadia History The collection was established in 1966. The nudeus of the collection was the private research library of Winthrop Pickard Bell, historian, philosopher, and author. Since 1976, the collection has been supported through the endowment for the Winthrop Pickard Bell Chair in Maritime Studies and a grant. Description The collection includes material on all aspects of Maritime Studies and the history and culture of the area once known as Acadia. The primary focus of the collection is pre-1945 material for the present day provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, and the north-eastern area of the state of Maine. Areas of special interest are the Methodist church, the history of immigration and settlement patterns, local histories, and the works of T.C. Haliburton. The collection is being developed further and attempts are being made to improve the holdings of newspapers on microfilm. Language English, French, and small amounts of German and Micmac language material. Holdings 7,000 volumes; 320 serials; 31 serials currently received; 2,000 microfilm reels; 7,000 fiche; 1.5 linear metres of vertical files; 1,490 slides; 325 maps (sheets); 2 videotapes; 20 broadsides. Bibliographic Access The collection is catalogued in a separate fiche and book catalogue. There is an index to the pamphlet file and a printed index to the catalogue of slides. LC subject headings and classification are used. The holdings are recorded in the National Library Union Catalogue and UTLAS.
