Many of the chapbooks were collected by wood-engraver, illustrator, and humorist, Joseph Crawhill (1821-1896) who, with Andrew Tuer, initiated a brief revival of the chapbook form at the Leadenhall Press in the 1880s. Description The collection is a representative collection of the little stitched booklets popular during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.These provide a rich research source for the social historian. Included are: fairy tales; lives of heroes such as Robin Hood and Dick Whittington; accounts of trials and executions; romances; works of humour and poetry. The chronological emphasis is on the early nineteenth century. The geographic emphasis is on Scotland and England. Language English. Holdings 33 volumes.
