History
While the library has always housed works concerning the Eastern Townships, the collection did not begin to expand significantly until the late 1950s and early 1960s. Due to the concentrated efforts of Arnold S. Banfill, Chief Librarian from 1951 to 1967, and Philip H. Scowen, long-time friend and benefactor of the university, the library acquired many rare and valuable items of local interest. A certain number were purchased, while others were donated. Since 1992, the archival material of the Eastern Townships Collection of the Library is managed by the Eastern Townships Research Centre.

Description
The collection contains books and archival material (textual records, photographs, maps and plans, sound recordings, etc.) on the development of the Eastern Townships.

English and French.

Holdings
1,400 monographs; 115 serials; 400 microforms. 100 linear meters of textual records: 575 maps and plans; 8,800 photographs; 275 sound recordings.

Bibliographic Access
The publications are catalogued in the on-line public access system of the Library (BORIS). LC subject headings and classification are used. The holdings are recorded in UTLAS. The archival material is described in different findings aids (electronic and printed) according to the Rules for Archival Description of the Bureau of Canadian Archivists.
