The University of Alberta purchased the collection in 1981 from the Javitch family of Montreal. After emigrating to Montreal in the 1950s, Gregory Javitch became interested in the history of the aboriginal peoples of North America and began to develop a collection relating to the voyages of discovery and to the initial impact of Europeans on the native populations.
The collection includes material on the customs, dances, music, traditions, and languages of American Indians; Indian warfare; peace treaties and removal grants; and the general disposition of the aboriginal inhabitants. The collection covers North, Central, and South America, from Eusebius (1518) to the twentieth century. There is also European material related to voyages of discovery and antiquities. The library continues to purchase selected foreign language material and continues to augment the collection as items become available.
The collection is fully catalogued on OPAC.
