The Novosti collection was purchased en bloc from the Press Office of the former Soviet Embassy in Ottawa during the crisis of the political disintegration of the U.S.S.R. in December 1991.
Description
The collection consists of the Press Office's extensive working collection of approximately 70 000 photographs, briefing notes, speech drafts, press releases, newspaper clippings and some pamphlets. Most of the photographs bear substantial captions or working notes on the verso. Condition ranges from good to excellent. The materials had been generated both in the Soviet Union and in the Ottawa office, for staff use or for distribution to the press and the public.

Bibliographic Access
The detailed classification of the collection approximates the Marxist-Leninist scheme used in the former Embassy Press Office. The Finding Aid (54 pages) consists of a five-page introduction, a two-page summary of the twenty-five classes, and a detailed breakdown of each class.
