History
The library of Dr. Léo Pariseau was acquired in 1943, thanks to the «Amis de la Bibliothèque Léo-Pariseau» committee. First deposited in the Bibliothèque de la santé, it was transferred in 1987 to the Services des livres rares et des collections spéciales for conservation and valuation.
Description
The collection assembled by Dr. Pariseau (1882-1944) focuses essentially on the history of medicine and related sciences. It ranges from translations of ancient medical works to most of the great authors of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, in rare, unique or out of print editions. Magnificent texts on anatomy and surgery are complemented by significant works on astronomy, mathematics, pre-Linnaean botany, chemistry and pharmacy, including the first edition of Moyse Charas's Pharmacopée royale galénique et chymique, published in Paris in 1676. Physics, magnetism, electricity and micrography, the favourite fields of Dr. Pariseau, who was a radiologist, are comprehensively represented. The collection also includes a number of works by Athanase Kircher, including Ars Magna Lucis et Umbrae, published in Rome in 1646. From the 19th and 20th centuries, softcover books and Canadiana illustrate the diversity of Léo Pariseau's interests.
