Bennett Library Subjects Printing and publishing in Renaissance Venice; Aldine Press; Bookbinding--History; Rare books History This collection was purchased through a donation from the Wosk family of Vancouver and from the Vancouver businessman, Hugh McDonald, in 1995. Description The collection includes original editions of the Aldine Press, published in Venice and Rome, starting in 1501 and ending in 1580. The collection is strong for the period 1501 to 1515 (Aldus Manutius, the elder, died in 1515). Also included are bibliographies, auction catalogues, booksellers' catalogues, and scholarly works on the subject. Sixteen of the volumes have modern reproduction bindings from Renaissance models and five are in original bindings. Language Works in Greek, Latin, Italian, German and English are present. Holdings 106 Aldine volumes and a growing number of supporting works. Bibliographic Access Cataloguing of this collection is in progress on the Library's computerized system.
