Mu Collection University of Toronto, East Asian Library Subjects China--Rare books History Reverend William C. White purchased a Chinese library of some forty thousand volumes in 1933. It consisted of volumes collected by Mr. Mu Hsüen hsün (1880-1929), a former Chinese secretary at the German Legation in Peking. Half the funds for the purchase were provided by Dr. Sigmund Samuel and Sir Robert Mond. The remainder of the funds was collected by Bishop White and Professor John C. Ferguson. Gaps in the Mu collection were filled under the direction of Professor W. A.C. H. Dobson with the assistance of a grant from the Carnegie Corporation. Description Most of the rare books now in the Library are part of the original Mu Collection. Qing publications are the best represented. Some of the titles are manuscript copies, among which are four titles verified as original draft copies.
