The collection was established in 1965. Professors Ann Saddlemyer and Roger Bishop resolved a disagreement between the University of Texas and Sir Herbert Read (1893-1968). Consequently three trunks of Sir Herbert's papers were deposited with the University of Victoria Library.
Description
The collection includes all editions of books and pamphlets, all periodical articles, all manuscript materials, and all related materials. The chronological and geographic emphasis is on twentieth century England. The collection does not include museum material such as artifacts, clothing, etc. Material in many languages is constantly being added to the collection.
Language
English predominates. There is also material in Gemman, Hungarian, Italian, and Arabic.

380 monographs; 20 serial titles; 2 microforms; 1 film; 1 audiotape; 50 picture files; 2 vertical files; 12 linear metres of manuscripts; and 2 phonograph records.

The collection is catalogued in a card catalogue. The holdings are recorded on UTLAS. Uncatalogued material is accessible. Special indexes, bibliographies, and other finding aids are available. LC classification is used.
