Richard Maurice Bucke Collection

The collection was donated in 1968 by Mrs. Ina Moss.

Richard Maurice Bucke was Walt Whitman's literary executor, and also superintendent of the London Ontario Asylum for the Insane from 1876 until his death in 1902. Bucke wrote on a variety of subjects, including mental and moral philosophy; Walt Whitman and Leaves of grass; the Bacon - Shakespeare question; and the treatment of the insane. This collection includes books, manuscripts, letters, and clippings left by Walt Whitman to R. M. Bucke as his literary executor, as well as Bucke's manuscripts, letters, and published works. Also included are newspaper clippings and magazine articles on Walt Whitman; variant editions of Leaves of grass; and photographs. The collection is not, at present, being developed actively. However, secondary source material on Bucke is collected.


515 monographs; 1 serial; 6 microfilms; 300 items in picture files; 3.5 linear metres of manuscripts.

The collection is catalogued in a separate, published catalogue, Richard Maurice Bucke : a catalogue based upon the collections of the University of Western Ontario Libraries, edited by Mary Ann Jameson (see below). There is also a list of acquisitions made after the publication of the catalogue. The holdings are recorded in the university union catalogue.

Physical Access
The collection is in a special collections area which is open to the public, Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. From October to March, it is also open Saturday 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., and 1:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m. For further information visit:
