Description Richard Maurice Bucke was Walt Whitman's literary executor, and also superintendent of the London Ontario Asylum for the Insane from 1876 until his death in 1902. Bucke wrote on a variety of subjects, including mental and moral philosophy; Walt Whitman and Leaves of grass; the Bacon - Shakespeare question; and the treatment of the insane. This collection includes books, manuscripts, letters, and clippings left by Walt Whitman to R. M. Bucke as his literary executor, as well as Bucke's manuscripts, letters, and published works. Also included are newspaper clippings and magazine articles on Walt Whitman; variant editions of Leaves of grass; and photographs. The collection is not, at present, being developed actively. However, secondary source material on Bucke is collected. Language English. Holdings 515 monographs; 1 serial; 6 microfilms; 300 items in picture files; 3.5 linear metres of manuscripts. There is also a list of acquisitions made after the publication of the catalogue. The holdings are recorded in the university union catalogue.
